Drop out
Find a large house in the country
The band moves in – find gigs.
In the spirit of the Allmans and the Dead, we had two drummers, John McDowell & Warren Pratt, bassist, Lloyd Williams and Stanley Sichel and myself on guitars, a sound man, Peter Haden, a crew (Lou Waring & Bruce Womack), two vans, three dogs and a PA.
And the house:
The Old Homestead
Built in 1792, (give or take a few years)
11 bedrooms, 110 acres
Mason, New Hampshire
The rent was only $350 per month. These days, that’s about $2,700! No problem for a bunch of broke musicians. We played colleges and clubs throughout New England and after a year of communal life, the 60s, for us, were officially over.
