Way Too Much

I’m overwhelmed with entertainment options. I’ve got movies I haven’t watched, cds and mp3 I haven’t listened to and lots of books I haven’t read. It all looks good on the shelf. And then every week there’s a new list of must see, hear and read product. I don’t know how anyone finds anything that’s out there.

Living in sparsely populated Central Oregon, I’m surprised at the volume of live music available on any night. The Sisters Folk Festival features forty acts. I’ve heard of three of them.  The available technology allows everyone to be a studio, record company, publisher, actor etc, I just got to experience this for myself. It’s great and then it’s not. There’s no filtering of material or acts available for consumption. We all just get to throw it out there and hope something sticks. And hope that somebody can discover it. Or at least make ourselves happy in the process.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying the old system where A&R guys, publishers and studio heads got to decide what was worthy for us to enjoy was any better. It was just a lot less crowded and seemed easier to find stuff – and be found.
